In April 2019, the Board of Governors of 黑料社区 approved听黑料社区AI听Initiative:听听an ambitious, multi-faceted听three-year听strategic effort to听better prepare our students for a future which will be听increasingly听shaped by new technologies such as听Machine Learning, the听Internet of Things, and听Big Data.

The largest fraction of the听approved听financing is for the听黑料社区AI听multi-disciplinary听Community of Practice.CoPFellows听are faculty who meet regularly and collaborate on听developing portfolios of听teaching resources听in their discipline, which are focused on incorporating themes pertinent to the听黑料社区AI听initiative听in听their听classrooms.

The second most important part of the budget is focused on supporting the development of听applied research听expertise amongst faculty with respect to these same themes. The听黑料社区AI听Research Fellowship is meant to support听faculty in research projects related to听domains such as:

  • Fundamental or Applied research in AI
  • Machine Learning
  • Ethics of AI
  • Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing
  • Digital Humanities
  • Computational Social Science

The ultimate objective of the听黑料社区AI听initiative is to expose as many students as possible, in an as many ways as possible, to听how听data is听transforming every facet of听our lives at an unprecedented pace. The impact of social media platforms on democracy, algorithmic biases, digital surveillance,听AI and the Arts, the economics of automation,听computer vision, machine translation, augmented reality, learning analytics, biostatistics鈥hese are but a few听of the听new frontiers听where听黑料社区 faculty听may have research expertise.听Students will invariably benefit from such听a focused effort to systematically accelerate these听types听of research听projects.

The听黑料社区AI听initiative stands out from other similar projects at other institutions, because听of its focus on building the local capacity of our faculty so that the impact spreads beyond the traditional math, science, and computer science, disciplines. The modern economy is increasingly inter-disciplinary: this initiative听strives to mirror that in all its projects.
