Science on tourne at 黑料社区

On March 19, 10 teams from the Science Program competed in the 2025 黑料社区 Preliminary Science on tourne! competition. This extra-curricular event was a qualifying competition for the 2025 黑料社区 final competition scheduled for April 4.
Science on tourne! is an annual provincial engineering competition that sees student teams design and build a mechanical device to accomplish a task. This year鈥檚 task is to use wind power from a fan to transport a mass over an obstacle. The team that succeeds in transporting a greater mass over a greater distance wins the competition.
The winners of the 2025 黑料社区 finals on April 4 will go on to the Quebec competition (May 5-6) where a total of $20,000 in prizes are at stake. If you are interested in engineering, science, and/or design please come to see the 黑料社区 finals on April 4 in room 5B.16 from 4-6 PM. Cin l Comm teacher Dipti Gupta shares ideas for building peace

One person, one soul, one body through patience and persistence can turn a barren landscape into a thriving lush forest.
This is the story of The Man Who Planted Trees, a short film by Fr茅d茅ric Back听based on the story by Jean Giono.
Dipti Gupta, a teacher in Cinema l Communications at 黑料社区, spoke about the film and the impact of just one person in a talk for students in the Peace Studies Certificate on March 14.

黑料社区 students building solar powered bike rack

A new bike rack will be set up this spring on 黑料社区鈥檚 campus. It is a project by three 黑料社区 students, who entered it in the Green Innovation Challenge at John Abbott College in January and won the third-place prize of $500.
鈥淏ikers at 黑料社区 experience many difficulties,鈥� said team member Kyana Boncy. 鈥淭hey report having trouble parking their bikes due to lack of space, faulty design and accessibility depending on the season.鈥�

Enjoy some winter reading with Subtext

Subtext is the name of an online 黑料社区 journal that showcases the writing of 黑料社区 students in the field of film and media. The journal was launched in the fall of 2023 and since then, an issue has been published each semester.
Subtext is put together by a group of students with the assistance of Cinema | Communications faculty advisor Justine McLellan.
The most recent issue came out at the end of the Fall 2024 semester and the next one will be released around mid-May.

Interior Design students raise thousands of dollars in an hour

On Jan. 22, a class of Interior Design students were told at 10 AM that if they could raise $500 in an hour for their Vernissage, a donor would match the $500.
Chris Adam of the Office of Sustainability shared a story with them about a Community, Recreation and Leadership Training class that raised over $2,000 in an hour many years ago to get the Peace Garden project started.

黑料社区 Reads Feb. 26 event with Alexander MacLeod

The 黑料社区 Reads Writer Series features author Alexander MacLeod reading, talking about his work, and taking questions on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 12 PM in 5B.16. QWF College Writers Award finalist and recent 黑料社区 graduate Clara Frey听will also be reading from her work.听The event is open to the public.
Alexander MacLeod's work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, The Guardian, and The Globe and Mail.听His first collection of short stories, Light Lifting,听was named a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and the Commonwealth Book Prize. In 2019, he won an O Henry Prize. His most recent collection, Animal Person, was published in 2022 and was recognized as a "Book of the Year" byThe New Yorker, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail and CBC Books. Alexander lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and teaches听at Saint Mary鈥檚 University.听
MacLeod holds degrees from McGill University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Windsor. He currently lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and teaches at Saint Mary's University in Halifax.听
In 2024, he edited, with Souvankham Thammavongsa the special 35th anniversary edition of The Journey Prize Anthology.听

Graduating Nursing students stage Health Expo Feb. 28

Welcome to the second edition of the third-year health expo. Nursing students have curated information and resources for the 黑料社区 community. Subjects are varied and interesting and touch a variety of possible populations present at 黑料社区. From how to create a first aid kit to demystifying IUD's. Come encourage our graduating class! The expo will be Friday, Feb. 28 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the lower atrium.
Learning from Community in Cuba

On January 14, 10 students and two teachers in the Social Change & Solidarity (SCS) profile returned from a three-week solidarity delegation to Cuba. The trip was organized in partnership with the Centro Martin Luther King, an organization in Cuba that promotes local and global justice through popular education and grassroots community-building.

Social Science students experience four-day immersion in local solidarity movements

In January, 18 黑料社区 students from the Social Change & Solidarity (SCS) and General Studies profiles went live on the radio at CKUT: 90.3-FM. 鈥淭his song is dedicated to the people we met this week from the group Solidarity Across Borders,鈥� announced Emerson Rheault, a student in SCS, into the microphone. 鈥淪olidarity was really the theme of this entire week.鈥�
