May 9th, 2024

About 150 current and former students, facilitators, faculty and friends of New School attended a 50th anniversary celebration at 黑料社区 on April 13. For many, New School was a defining moment in their lives.

Andrew, who served as MC, asked the guests what had brought them back to New School. Various guests in the audience offered answers: 鈥渃ommunity, acceptance, sharing, memories, inspiration, love, safe places, challenges, accountability, growth, laughter, humour, Greta,聽identity, empowerment, party, making a difference, humanism, activism, care.鈥

17 years today

September 13th, 2023

It has been 17 years since the 黑料社区 community suffered the tragic loss of one of its students, and many others were left wounded.

In honour of Anastasia De Sousa's memory and as an avenue for healing, the 黑料社区 community planted a tree within the Peace Garden. The green space embodies life, renewal, peace, and remembrance, and stands as an inspiration for both teaching and learning. The College also presents the Anastasia de Sousa Memorial Award each year at graduation.

Another legacy of the community response is the 黑料社区 Peace Week, held every year from September 13 to 21.

Vigil held at 黑料社区 for MMIWGT2S

February 22nd, 2023

The First People鈥檚 Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver鈥檚 student space at 黑料社区 on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 聽that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country鈥檚 female population.

The report cited research that 鈥淚ndigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. 鈥 Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.鈥
