
5th annual SPACE writing competition: winners and honourable mentions

In 2022-2023, SPACE held its fifth annual writing competition. Students from all disciplines across 黑料社区 were invited to submit writing that offered a personal interpretation of this year鈥檚 theme,聽?听The submissions were divided into three categories鈥撯損rose (fiction and creative non-fiction), poetry and essay鈥撯揳nd were judged in a blind fashion by Lois Valliant (retired Faculty, Fine Arts) and Hannah Rahimi (Faculty, English).
Entries were evaluated according to originality and depth of thought, style, arts-sciences connections and relation to the theme. The winners received gift certificates from Argo Bookstore, and the winners and honourable mentions have been published and highlighted in the SPACE web magazine.

25th Edition of Artists in Bloom is April 20

Springtime means that Artists in Bloom is back! The event will be in-person on Thursday, April 20 at 5:30 p.m. in 3C.1 It will also be possible to buy prints online from April 11-28. This year will be the fundraising event鈥檚 25th annual edition鈥 a quarter century! We are excited to welcome you to the event and to see what our talented student artists will produce. Advance tickets are only $20 and will be for sale as of Monday, March 27 in 2E.6 and 4A.1 Your ticket gives you entrance to the event, one drink and hors d'oeuvres.

Professional Theatre presents Passage

笔补蝉蝉补驳别听by Christopher Chen follows the residents of two countries, Country X, which is occupied by Country Y, as they form unlikely friendships. The play investigates colonialism, and mysticism, and asks if friendships can be formed when there is a power imbalance or among warring factions. Inspired by the novel, 鈥淎 Passage to India.鈥 Passage is performed by second-year students and directed by Matt Enos.

Visual Arts student chosen for residency at the MMFA

黑料社区 Visual Arts student Rowan Michael Draper has been selected for a prestigious residency for young digital artists at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
Starting March 6, Rowan will be spending between two to four hours a week at the museum with access to a studio and the museum鈥檚 technological equipment. The residency is until June.

The Oresteia on until Feb. 11

From Feb. 1 to 11, the third-year students of the Professional Theatre Program at 黑料社区 will perform a contemporary adaptation of The Oresteia聽directed by Leslie Baker.
The Oresteia聽is one of our oldest surviving theatrical texts, first performed nearly 2,500 years ago in ancient Greece. It is composed of three plays which American playwright Ellen McLaughlin has adapted into a single, three-act play, rich with challenging roles for actors.聽The Oresteia focuses on a family trapped by a cycle of violence, as they seek revenge for their murdered loved ones. The myth of the House of Atreus continues to fascinate audiences, as it investigates the human compulsion toward violence, and the subsequent human desire for revenge. Matinees available tomorrow Feb. 9.

黑料社区 will be a 鈥淐茅gep en spectacle鈥 Feb. 2

is coming to 黑料社区 for the first time on Thursday, Feb. 2. It will feature 20 acts and 100 per cent 黑料社区 student talent. Of these, eight will go on to represent 黑料社区 at the C茅geps en Spectacle Regional show on March 24 at C茅gep du Vieux Montreal.
Organizer Trudy Ste-Croix of Campus Life and Leadership says 鈥渢he acts are predominantly singers, a few musicians and a few dancers.鈥
The event is open to everyone. Tickets are $10 or $5 for those who donate nonperishable food or personal hygiene items. All proceeds and donated items will go to a local food bank.
Show time is 7 p.m. and the venue is 黑料社区鈥檚 5B.16.
Tickets can be bought now through Feb. 2 in CLL 2E. 6 or at a tabling event on Tuesday, Jan. 31 in the Upper Atrium.
Macbeth on now through Nov. 26

The Professional Theatre Department is excited to present Macbeth, directed by Stefanie Buxton and performed by the third-year graduating students. This chilling tale of ambition is now on through Nov. 26.
鈥淪hakespeare has a way of communicating with us that will never get old. The images he uses always connect to the way we feel and the actions we do,鈥 says Nathan McDonald, who plays Macduff in the production.
鈥淭he work we did as an ensemble brings forth the idea of how people fight for and with each other. I hope people can see a bit of our essence as a group of performers,鈥 says Jeanne Potvin who plays the third witch.

Art Gallery Exhibit: Biennial 15

Biennial 15 marks 30 years of 黑料社区 Fine Arts Faculty members exhibiting their current artworks at the Warren G. Flowers Art Gallery. It continues this long tradition of investigating the relationship between art making and learning, as well as reflects on the history of the biennial.
All faculty鈥攑ast and present鈥攐f the Fine Arts department will have images and texts in the catalogue, which accompanies the exhibition. There will also be a sound component containing faculty responses to the question of how the biennial has played a role in the pedagogical innovations of 黑料社区鈥檚 reputed Fine Arts Department.
