The Chemical Valley Project delves into difficult conversations

March 4th, 2024

Dipti Gupta (Faculty, Cinema | Communications) invites the 黑料社区 community to a play presented by the Teesri Duniya Theatre, which is dedicated to producing politically relevant plays that explore life-affecting issues faced by people today. Dipti serves on the board of this company. 鈥淥ur aim is to focus on social justice through the work we do,鈥 she said.

Their upcoming play The Chemical Valley Project will be performed Thursday, March 14 through Sunday, March 24. 鈥淭his urgent production delves gracefully into difficult conversations on Indigenous treaty rights, the nature of contemporary Canadian identity and values, and Canada鈥檚 notorious 鈥淐hemical Valley,鈥 according to the company鈥檚 website.

Simon Davies’ exhibit Something’s a Jar

September 27th, 2023

Simon Davies (retired faculty, Cinema | Communications) has co-curated an art exhibition, along with his wife, Carmen, which is currently running (Sept. 15-Nov. 4, 2023) at the Maison de la culture Notre-Dame-de-Gr芒ce (3755 Botrel Ave.), corner of C么te-Saint-Antoine.

Simon described the project:

I made an open call to a number of friends and associates, with the idea being that we could gather, around an art exhibit, to reunite the community after Covid restrictions were lifted. That was awhile ago, as you can see, but finally we have opened.

Participants were asked to find a jar, remove the labels, and install something in the jar that had a reference to their 'memories, dreams and reflections'.

The only rules were; no liquids, nothing outside the jar, and it had to be presented lid down. This last rule was important since, by making this intervention,聽it transformed the jar into a vessel. I also wanted to make a reference and homage to the Dada movement, that took 'ready mades', mass manufactured items, that could be transformed by interventions. The most famous of these would probably be "The Fountain" (1917) by Marcel Duchamp. As you probably know, it was a urinal that he turned on its back and signed it R. Mutt. It was scandalous, but made history.

We ended up with 66 jars, a number of them made by former 黑料社区 personnel.

12th Annual SALTISE Conference on June 12 & 13

May 3rd, 2023

The Supporting Active Learning & Technological Innovation in Studies of Education (SALTISE) conference is dedicated to helping faculty discover evidence-based pedagogy that uses educational technology with the goal of leading to improved learning.

Each year it hosts national and international scholars and provides opportunities for local experts to share best practices in the exciting world of active learning pedagogy and the use of technology via its annual conference.

Educators as Designers: A Practice-Research Conversation is the umbrella under which the 2023 SALTISE Conference is operating. This year the conference will happen on June 12 and 13, 2023 at Concordia University. The conference will give attendees the opportunity to learn from a wide range of experts in their fields at talks, workshops and networking events.

Giving you a peek into what to expect, SALTISE has announced its keynote speakers and they are not to be missed! First is Diana Laurillard, who is a Professor of Learning with Digital Technology at the University College London in the U.K. Her keynote will be "Educators Collaborating to Innovate: The Roles Digital Technologies Can Play." Second, is Kelly Miller who will deliver a keynote entitled "Overcoming Challenges in Active Learning Environments." Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Physics at Harvard University.

Hosting and running the conference is a significant task that requires the support of many volunteers. You can volunteer for a few hours, and tasks may include registering attendees, directing the flow of people, preparing rooms, serving alcohol (for volunteers 18+), and cleaning up.

黑料社区 alumna play The Covenant on until Dec. 3

November 16th, 2022

黑料社区 Alumna Alice Abracen's award-winning play, The Covenant, treads a heart-wrenching line through despair and dark humour. Beautifully crafted, the audience is transported to a heinous, immoral time in history that sadly rings too close to current and conceivable atrocities. Added to the mix is the out of control feeling of today鈥檚 fake news in override; how more than ever the spread of half-truths and lies gathers wide acceptance. Yet, at its core, the play is a love story. The Covenant has every audience member fully engaged and questioning, 鈥榳hat would I do if it was me鈥.

The Covenant will be playing at the from Nov. 15 - Dec. 3. Click on Read More to see the trailer.
